#On the Incident as Recorded
In A.S. 190, during a supply failure on the approaches to Bastion-Constantinople, a fixed Maw-Born at Chalk Pit Nine began to cough at bread. Two files of the Codex remember what followed, and each has its own accent. The Maw-Born file sets down a chain of attraction, one link after another, from the cart to the clerk. The Hollow-Walker file sets down what that chain did to the men holding the line. It gave them a crowd of beggars to look at, and while they looked, something else came forward under the crowd.
This plate covers the incident and nothing more. The pit, its name and its floor of stone have their own entry, and I will not dig them up a second time. My subject here is a sound, the bodies it gathered, and an assault that came in behind pity.
The year is attested. Nobody recorded the season, the watch, how long it lasted, which garrison stood there or what it cost. The southern end of the Sagittal Line has never been short of incidents. It has always been short of clerks willing to stand near one with a pencil.
#On the Cough
The thing in Chalk Pit Nine is a fixed specimen of Kargath's first and plainest hunger: a mouth, with exactly as much body as the mouth needs. It did not walk, and fixed Maw-Born never do. They eat the ground around them down toward bedrock and then sit in the hollow they have made, like a bishop in a cathedra he quarried with his own teeth. According to the record, this one ate its surrounding ground to stone during the supply failure. The record does not say it was satisfied afterward, and the taxon forbids anyone to assume so. A fixed specimen is still a hungry one.
Once the ground was stone, the cough began. The record calls it rhythmic, and says it came whenever food carts passed within cannon range. That is the whole of the evidence. Clerks in three Bureaus have spent the years since trying to make it bigger.
Keep three measures in three separate drawers. The edge of the stone roughly marks how far the jaws reach. Cannon range is a gunner's yardstick, used because nothing better was to hand, and it tells us only where the carts were when the cough answered them. Nobody measured how far the cough carried, or who could hear it. The beat of the rhythm, the organ that made it, and whether it was a signal, a reflex or the dry heave of a creature smelling barley it could not reach all go in the drawer marked unknown. I have locked that drawer.
What was seen: carts passed, and the mouth coughed. What was explained: nothing.
#On the Pleading Screen
The Hollow-Walkers came first.
They came because the cough drew them. That is all the record claims, and all I will claim. The Ledger does not know whether the sound called them or simply told one hunger where another was being refused. A starving thing walked toward a starving noise, and theology has filed stranger pilgrimages than that.
From a distance, what reached the wire looked like the supply failure itself, walking. They were thin to the hinge of the jaw, arms wrapped round collapsed bellies, gait uneven, and some of them made the shapes of speech in the way the parent file describes. A sentry on short rations, watching for an enemy, saw instead a line of hungry people begging for the very thing he lacked himself. Veterans tell a Walker from a refugee by the wet mouth, which is hard to see from a parapet. Begging carries much further.
The Walkers drew the sentries' eyes toward the obvious object of pity. That is what the record says, and it is enough. Nobody needs to invent a corporal lowering his rifle or a chaplain stepping out with a loaf. Attention is rationed like everything else on a wall. A sentry has a fixed amount of it, he spends it wherever his eye goes, and nobody gives it back. Each look he spent on a kneeling, cadaverous figure at the front of the gathering was a look he did not spend on the ground behind it.
The scavengers came under them. The phrase means cover and nothing more. It does not mean tunnels, or bellies splitting open to release passengers, or some fresh horror that needs a new taxon and a new committee. It means the scavengers moved forward while the Walkers held the eye, and the Walkers were numerous enough to hide the assault. The record does not say what the scavengers were, so I will not give them a face. Being unnamed did not stop them reaching the line.
Nobody had to give an order, either. The Hollow-Walker file states it plainly: hunger arranges bodies. A mouth that could not move produced a crowd that could. The crowd became a screen, and the screen covered an assault. Kargath did not need to be there. His appetite did the staff work for him.
One convenient excuse I rule out. Nothing in the record says the cough reached into the sentries and bent their wills toward mercy, and the doctrine of the demonic forbids anyone to presume it. The Great Deceiver may set out temptations, but a man still chooses where to look. These men looked at the beggars because the Church has spent generations teaching men to look at beggars. In a village that teaching is right. On the Constantinople approaches it opened a gap in the wall.
#On Patrols and Proposals
The Maw-Born file carries the chain on past the assault. The scavengers drew patrols. The patrols drew reports, the reports drew requisitions, and the requisitions drew counter-requisitions, in which one office asks that another office's request be fed to somebody else. Each link was a little less hungry than the one before it. At the far end sat paper, and the record never once reports paper being eaten.
Then came the proposal. Someone suggested using the fixed Maw-Born as a disposal site for spoiled rations. The file names nobody, and I will name nobody. In a famine, spoiled stores are an administrative obscenity. They are food nobody may eat, guarded by hungry men, filling carts that good food needs. The mouth would never wander off and would take every delivery. To a clerk it looked like a facility.
The creature ate the spoiled rations, the cart, the mule and the left wheel track, and the author of the proposal later revised the position. The record says the wheel track was eaten. It does not say why, or why only the left, and I certify neither a mystery about the ground's memory nor a moral about roads. The full account belongs to the site's own plate.
The proposal also sent a food cart right up to a creature known to cough at food carts within cannon range. The record never puts those two facts together. I have set them side by side on the page and left them there.
#On Contact and the Remaining Record
What follows is general doctrine drawn from the taxon files. It is not an account of anything done at Chalk Pit Nine.
Food in transit past a known fixed specimen is bait on wheels. Cover it, keep the escort quiet, route the carts as far off as the road allows, and assume that distance is still not enough. The Bureau of War's Hollow-Walker protocol applies to anything the bait draws in. Keep your distance and keep silent. Disable the legs, destroy the torso, and break the jaw before recovery. Record what it said only after the engagement is over. Against the mouth itself, the gun crews fire at hinge and throat.
The next ruling is mine, not a Bureau's. When the hungry gather at the wire, the nearest pleading figure is the least important thing in the field. Give the begging to one man and give the dark behind it to another, and make sure the second man has never been told what a beggar looks like.
Standing Order 31-H formerly permitted "bread-on-bayonet pacification attempts" under chaplain supervision.
As the Hollow-Walker doctrine record states, feeding a Walker from within arm's reach has always been forbidden, and the old text has been reclassified as a copying error. That correction belongs to the doctrine file and predates this plate. Chalk Pit Nine did not prompt it. It is reprinted here because pity is the oldest breach in the wall, and that wording once put pity into print.
Now for what the record lacks. It has no count of the attackers and no casualty total. It does not say how the assault ended, whether the Walkers were cleared, or whether the Maw-Born was destroyed. It holds no survey of the pit from the eleven years since. The Bureau of Doctrine may have its preferences. I do not seal preferences.
