#On the Public Record

"Larvam detrahe; personam non detrahes." — Gloss in the present author's hand

In A.S. 199 an intake clerk of the Confession Vault at Bastion-Przemyśl wrote down the same sentence three times. Three confessants, each received separately, each said I deserve better. The clerk recorded that cadence, tone and emphasis matched exactly, as though all three had learned the line from one prompt-book. The clerk was reassigned. The confessants were never found. The file says Resolved.

That is the latest dated entry the Codex holds on the Golden Masquerade of Varna. I begin with it because it is the only kind of evidence the Masquerade leaves behind: a line delivered well by someone who has since left the stage.

The Masquerade is the one cult of Atheron the Bureau will name aloud. Other Pride cells are discussed in sealed rooms by men who keep their voices low and their chins lower. The Golden Masquerade appears in public filings because it wears its corruption on the outside of the face, where a provost can see it. The master register of the Seven places it at Varna, the Ashen Redoubt above the Black Sea. The Bureau places it in any briefing that needs an enemy with good costumes.

#On the Parts Assigned

The master register's entry on Atheron's cult armature runs to four lines, and it is more honest than most dossiers of four hundred pages. Pride's cults are run as pageants. Converts are flattered into roles. Cells stage mock trials and executions. The Golden Masquerade of Varna is given as the example, and the Codex will not pretend to know its programme beyond that. No script survives, and no playbill. The Bureau has never recovered a costume list, though it has recovered a great many opinions.

What the entry does establish is how people are brought in, and that is by casting. Pride has little use for the vain, who are already content with themselves and make poor converts. It recruits the overlooked: the quartermaster whose ledgers are flawless and whose name never reaches the commendation lists, the deacon who writes the bishop's sermons, the sergeant who held the trench while the captain filed the report. The dedicated Pride dossier says Atheron's influence-demons hunt wounded dignity, and the wound is often honestly earned. These people have been undervalued. The Synod undervalued them. I have undervalued several personally, and in writing.

The Masquerade does not argue with such a person. It hands them a part. You are the Magistrate. You are the Herald. You are the one who passes sentence. The recognition is real. So is the deference of the other players, and so, for a while, is the feeling of standing at last where one always belonged. In a grey life it is the most real thing going. Then the role starts to demand its actor.

A mock tribunal rehearses the habit of judging. A mock execution teaches an audience where to look, and whom to look down on. The record does not say whether every execution the Masquerade has staged was a mock one, and I will not supply the answer it lacks.

#On the Ranks of the Superior

The general Pride dossier records a five-rung ladder for Atheron's human cults: Aspirants, Elevated, Entitled, Crowned, Exalted. Nothing in the Codex's custody gives a full roster of that ladder for the Golden Masquerade. A given cell may stand on three rungs, or may have sawn off the bottom one to keep the riff-raff from climbing. What follows is Pride's general pattern as observed elsewhere. The Masquerade is presumed to follow it because it has never been caught doing otherwise.

The Aspirant still works. He wants recognition and will labour for it. The Elevated has his recognition and guards it like a dog with a cathedral bone. The Entitled no longer remembers having a self without the office; ask him who he is and he recites his title. The Crowned rules a cell absolutely, and alone. The Exalted has fused so completely with his position that the dossier hesitates to call him quite human.

What the Masquerade performs is an exchange at a fixed rate: rank goes in, worth comes out. The role confers a station. The station confers deference. Over time the deference is mistaken for the measure of the soul. From then on a demotion is a death and a correction is an assault. The actor cannot leave the stage, because nobody offstage still counts to him as a person.

The flesh follows. Documented Atheronic manifestations include a spine that stiffens past its natural curve, a lengthening neck, eyes that settle into a downward cast and stay there, crown-growths of metal or bone at the brow, and the inability to kneel. In the terminal cases the feet fuse to whatever raises them: a pedestal, a dais, a step. These are recorded among Pride's servants generally. I attach no Masquerade name to any of them, because the Bureau has given me none.

The general rules on demonic influence hold that corruption stays reversible. A mutated servant may still choose differently, even if the spine never bends again. The Synod's settled preference for executing the Pedestaled is policy. It is not a metaphysical finding, whatever the sermon says. Doctrine keeps the door open. Purity keeps a rope beside it.

#On the Carpathian Docket

Varna is a cliff fortress and tariff harbour on the western Black Sea, with gun galleries above the water and bone-kilns smoking day and night. It is a secondary coastal installation, not one of the Line's bastions. Przemyśl is a wire-strung choke-bastion in the western Carpathians, on the Sagittal Line, facing Atheron's eastern heights and the Crownspire above them. The Masquerade has been reported at Przemyśl under Varna's name. Nothing in the record establishes a road, a courier or a chain of command between the two. Pride's cults are independent cells and take no direct orders from their Sin-General. A cell need not have come from Varna to wear Varna's name, any more than a clerk need have seen Strasbourg to stamp its seal.

The Bastion-Przemyśl dossier records two detections in the Carpathian supply corridor.

In A.S. 187 a logistics officer was found promoting subordinates by a ranking system the record calls "of suspiciously external origin." The file does not explain the system, its author or how it worked. It records only that the ranking existed and was not the Synod's.

In A.S. 199 the intake clerk heard I deserve better three times, in one voice, from three mouths. Purity investigated. The clerk was reassigned. The confessants were not located. The investigation was filed as Resolved. The record does not prove the three were one person. It names no leader. It does not say who decided that the clerk was the part of the problem that needed moving.

Przemyśl is fertile ground for any sect that sells standing. Rations go by tag. Provost troops eat first, by policy. Officers sleep on the upper terrace. The Chapel of Counting files confessions three levels down, indexed and cross-referenced, so every sin a man admits becomes a line in someone else's ledger. A cult promising a man his rightful rank has no need to invent hierarchy there. It need only rehearse him in it.

#On Correction

Against Pride the Synod sets out its usual instruments. The Doctrine of Equality Before the Divine is recited at every Przemyśl muster before the provosts eat first. Humility Practices, the washing of feet and serving of meals, leave a fair share of officers privately convinced they are superior for submitting so gracefully. Rotation of Command keeps an officer from fusing with his post and throws out his expertise with the fusion. Confession of Pride catches only those who can still see their pride, which leaves out the very men it was built for. Peer accountability requires the proud to recognise that they have peers.

All of this fails in its own way at a bastion that hands out food, warmth and respect by rank. Preach equality to a man holding a three-day tag while he watches the terrace dine, and he hears a joke. The Masquerade, being a troupe of preening bastards, hears a recruiting opportunity.

A caution for Inquisitors with quotas. Resentment proves nothing. Neither does ambition. A sergeant who believes he would command better than his captain may simply be right, and the Codex has watched too many sergeants who were right go to the pyre to pretend otherwise. The marks of the Masquerade are the role, the rehearsal, the borrowed ranking and the line spoken in someone else's cadence. The grievance underneath is not one of them. Hang every man who says I deserve better and the Line will be empty by spring, with the cast untouched.

This Codex's entry on Atheron described the Golden Masquerade as "contained enough to suggest that Pride's infiltration has limits."

The Codex withdraws "contained." The latest dated report in its custody ends with the confessants unlocated and the file marked Resolved. Containment was asserted by filing. No one has demonstrated it.

#On the Present Application

The Bureau keeps the Golden Masquerade in public service because it is easy to picture. Gold masks, theatres, staged tribunals: a recruit can imagine it and assure himself he would know it on sight. The Atheron entry calls the masks and the Balkan opera houses a public caricature, and so they are. They make a good woodcut and a poor description of a logistics officer with a private ranking chart.

The registry of locations lists Varna in A.S. 201 as held, useful and compromised. Among the ailments of a harbour that still remembers the Ledgers and the Mirror Riot, it names debt, hunger, ash and Atheronic masquerade contamination. No document in the Codex's custody records the Masquerade's founding, its founder, its first performance or its final suppression. Atheron has never been shown to know its name.

What the record holds is an officer's chart, a clerk's slip, three confessants nobody found, and one word. The word is Resolved.
