Gasket Grease

The doors require it; the heretics have learned to write with it

Gasket grease keeps Irongate's pressure doors moving and its heretics writing. Engineering needs the compound; Purity objects to the handwriting.

Gasket Grease — Gasket Grease, rendered as oil-painting.
Gasket Grease. Filed under gasket-grease.

#On the Compound

Gasket grease is black, thick, and offensive to every sense the Creator issued. Fitters spread it on the seals of pressure doors so that a gasket seats without tearing and parts without shrieking. It smells of burned fat and hot iron. Under heat it does not run. It slumps, sulks, and stays where the fitter put it. That stubbornness is all of its virtue and most of its later notoriety.

It comes up out of the Valve Quarter of Bastion-Irongate, the district along the Transit Spine where gasket foundries, bolt shops, grease kettles and pressure-control shops crowd together under a reek of oil, hot metal and ozone. The archive does not say who first compounded it, from what, or under whose licence. I have asked. Engineering answered with a requisition form.

#On Its Licensed Uses

The gasket-hymn mechanic seats the gasket, checks its alignment, tightens to calibration and sings the sequence the hymnal assigns to the operation. The grease goes on before the chant and is still there after it. A dry seal binds, the door fails its stanza, and a corridor full of licensed singers learns what pressure does to men. Irongate cannot pray its doors shut dry.

So the substance travels beyond the workbench. Before a shift, workers receive a grease cross on the throat, the gasket anointing, so that the instrument of chant carries the mark of the instrument of seal. The Breath Office approves. No inspector has shown that the mark protects a throat or mends a valve, and none has been asked to; a rite need not work to be compulsory. Workers carry the stuff in small vials for touch-ups and field repair. At the passage controls, where the Breath Office checks voice-licence seals and Tunnel Command tests stanza compliance, a vial of grease buys what a sermon cannot. Bribes at those gates are paid in grease, valve-springs or choir exemptions, roughly in that order of frequency and the reverse order of shame.

Keep the terms apart. The gasket is the fitting. The brass gasket-ring is the coin of the Underchords. Shaft Priory throat wax, seal wax and the grease-salt rubbed into doorframes against silence are separate preparations again. Shared vocabulary is a clerk's convenience. It does not prove a shared kettle.

#On Reed's Throat

Reed served seven licensed years in Third Watch, Fourth Lung. He was revoked in A.S. 196 for ice-lung, Grade Three: stone dust settled in his chest until his note failed the audit. Some time after the revocation, on a date the file does not fix, he took heated gasket compound from the Valve Quarter and swallowed it.

The Bureau of Medicine recorded permanent aphonia by thermal injury, intentional. The Reed dossier gives the purpose plainly: a man who cannot sing cannot be made to sing. The Magistracy holds voices by licence, audit and heat allocation. Reed struck his own off the inventory. I will not describe the method further. Medicine described it badly enough.

BUREAU OF MEDICINE — CLINICAL APPENDIX, SEALED Condition: permanent aphonia by thermal injury Agent: heated gasket compound, intentionally ingested Recommendation: doctrinal containment; medical treatment secondary

Medicine did not foresee that the compound would outlast the injury as a tool, because Medicine foresees nothing it cannot bleed. The throat closed. The hand remained. A revoked singer who could no longer be audited took up the same black stuff and began to teach with it, by sign and by mark, in the corridors below the licensed districts. The material that ended his speech became the material of his teaching, and the Hush Court has been chasing the consequence ever since. Readers who want the man rather than the medium will find him filed under Reed.

#On Black Stone

The walls of the Dead Gallery and the lesser sub-grade corridors are basalt, black and close-grained. Grease drawn on them is black on black. Seen straight on by a hand-lamp, a written wall looks like a dirty wall. Hold the lamp low and to one side and the ridges rise: each stroke throws a small shadow behind it, and the notation appears line by raised line, like an impression in sealing wax. Raise the lamp again and it is gone. A patrol walking briskly with its lanterns held high, which is how patrols walk, will pass a whole lesson and report the corridor clean.

The marks record alternatives to the licensed hymnal: held notes, intervals that answer to pressure, adjustments for temperature, and sequences meant to reseat a gasket rather than force it. Some are crude. Some would kill the singer who tried them on a live door. The Reed dossier records that certain profiles match frequencies the Bureau of Engineering catalogued in A.S. 94 and filed as unfit for operational use. The Bureau of Bells has examined recovered fragments and called them structurally coherent profiles of non-standard frequency. Bells will go no further than that, and it is further than Engineering wishes Bells had gone.

Coherent notation is not proven performance. A score may be perfectly composed and still bring the ceiling down. Bells has certified the grammar. Nobody has certified how the mountain answers.

The Counterkey Circle claims more. By its account Irongate has been made to sing the wrong note for a century, and harmonics outside Magistracy control could hold the mountain. That is the Circle's proposition, attributed and unratified. I record it because Purity asked me to, and because the Circle's writers take more care over their scores than the Magistracy takes over its audits.

The marks are not all Reed's. Irongate reports also name Alen Rill as a writer of keys in grease. The file does not say whether Rill learned from Reed, taught him, or merely buys from the same kettle, and I will not marry two suspects for the sake of a tidy index. Reed teaches silent-sign to discarded singers. The walls are where the lessons are kept.

#On the Fourteen Marks

In A.S. 199 the Hush Court ran emergency harmonic audits. Fourteen workers produced harmonics that did not match their assigned stanzas. Fourteen were executed. The Bureau of Purity's sealed assessment then sorted the dead: four almost certainly Circle, six probably exhausted workers whose damaged voices cracked under the test, and four indeterminate. The Court hanged first and sorted afterward. Purity does its arithmetic on the far side of the rope.

Fourteen short grease lines have been reported near the entrance to the Dead Gallery, each crossed by a shallow diagonal. Bells reads cancellation notation, a harmonic struck out. Priory witnesses read a tally of martyrs. The marks will bear either reading and have been asked to bear several more. Purity ordered them scraped away three times. Each time, by report, they were found wet again. Nobody has explained this. A patient hand with a vial would explain it. No such hand has been seen.

The Bureaus divide as they always do. Engineering calls the marks graffiti. Bells calls them notation. Purity calls them evidence and schedules the scraper. The Bureau of Doctrine, which is to say my own office in its better moods, demands that the notation be preserved before it is destroyed.

The Choir Magistracy's first review classified the sub-grade grease marks as illiterate vandalism.

Reclassified as illicit acoustic notation of uncertain field viability. Vandals do not compose in intervals. The Magistracy has yet to apologise to the vandals.

#On Present Use and Preservation

As of A.S. 201, the Valve Quarter still renders grease by the kettle. Fitters still slather it on the seals, throats are still crossed before the shift, and the gatemen still take their vial. The heresy has not reduced lawful consumption by a single pot. The doors require grease, and the Choir requires the doors.

Below, the same compound still goes onto basalt in unlicensed hands. It moves along quiet routes where Tap-King Jaro sells grease and passes alike, and where Mira Slate does business with Reed on terms the file leaves unstated. Commerce is not membership. The Cartel sells to anyone with coin; the Circle writes with what it buys. Purity would like these to be one charge. They are two.

The compound is as innocent as a rope. It greases a seal or carries a key, depending on whose hand holds the vial. Any Bureau that wants gasket grease banned may first explain how Irongate's doors are to open.

Copy first. Scrape after. Purity may hold the lamp, low and to one side.

BUREAU OF DOCTRINE — STANDING POSITION Subject: gasket-grease notation, sub-grade Irongate Instruction: preserve recovered notation before burning the wall.
