Heresy of the Absent Creator

The wards still hold. The promise no longer does.

The northern garrisons' claim that the Creator is dead and miracles spend His residual holiness. The wards still hold; the Bureau of Purity still brands adherents and sends them to the Penal Choir.

#On the Prohibited Proposition

"The Creator is." — First Catechism, Article One. "The Creator was." — the same sentence as the Bureau of Purity reports hearing it in the northern garrisons, one letter shorter and seven years dearer.

HERESY, THIRD DEGREE — FIRST-ORDER PROHIBITED UNDER STANDING ORDER 7-A — BUREAU OF PURITY

The Heresy of the Absent Creator holds that the Creator is dead. Its adherents place the death at the Sundering or somewhere before it. They have never settled which, and the disagreement does not trouble them, since by their account the deceased has no further interest in the date.

Everything else they concede, which is what makes them dangerous. They concede the bells. They concede the relics, the consecrated stone, and the holy water that blisters demonic tissue under the Bureau of Medicine's glass. The miracles happen, the heretics agree, and they happen at the usual price. What the Church worships, they say, is a dead divinity whose residual holiness still runs through bone and bronze, the way sealing-wax stays soft for a while after the taper has been pinched out.

"Absent" is a clerical courtesy. The proposition is death. Withdrawal is the Church's own teaching and carries no penalty. Sleep belongs to a different heresy with a harsher sentence. The adherents of this one mean a corpse. They also part company with the Heresy of the Unnecessary Creator, which says the power was always in the bone. The Absent heresy grants that the power came from Somewhere, and claims that Somewhere has stopped breathing.

#On the Evidence That Continues to Work

The trouble is that the heretics are reading the same ledger we are.

Relics glow. Bells ring before any hand reaches the rope. Consecrated ground holds where bare earth gives way. Every one of these effects is paid for by a person. The chaplain who calls blessing down onto a parapet pays in years, in memory, in the steadiness of his own hands, and the Bureau of Medicine files the debt as "devotional exhaustion." The heretic does not dispute the bill. He disputes who is being paid.

At Vienna the reliquary of Saint Aldebrand shattered a sorcerer-lord, and the Bureau stamped the event MIRACLE, CATEGORY ONE, VERIFIED. As Warden of the Sacred Ledger I state that such an effect proves the living hand of the Creator at work in the world.

Doctrine reads the blaze at Vienna as a gift from a living Creator who holds back His voice and still stretches out His arm. The Absent heretic reads it as a withdrawal from a dead man's account, honoured by a bank that has not yet heard about the funeral. The Unnecessary heretic denies there was ever an account at all. That makes three readings and one pile of ash, and the Bureau keeps the ash.

"As Warden of the Sacred Ledger I state that such an effect proves the living hand of the Creator at work in the world."

Narrowed. A Category One verification certifies that the effect occurred, that the reliquary was in sanctioned custody, and that its holiness is of approved grade. It certifies nothing about the source. Attribution of source is reserved to Doctrine, which attributes it to the Creator, living, under Article One. The Warden regrets having asked a wax seal to do more than it can.

This is why the heresy cannot be beaten with an exhibit. Every proof the Bureau can put on the table, the heretic happily signs for as well.

What he takes away is the reason for the table. A living Creator can be petitioned, appeased, and waited for. A dead one leaves an estate in probate. On that view the Church becomes the executor of a will nobody has read, and nobody tithes to an executor. Worse, residual holiness is finite holiness. Every miracle spends capital that will never be replaced. Any quartermaster understands this at once, and the heresy goes wherever the quartermasters go.

#On the Northern Reception

Bastion-Königsberg is the northern anchor of the Sagittal Line. The Line meets the Baltic there, and the Masurian lakes spread east of it in a maze of reed and black water. The garrison faces the Grey, the Host Without Name, which does not speak, does not negotiate, and sits under Absolute Suppression. Soldiers report fog that wears faces. These are reports, and I file them as reports.

Consider the man on the wall. His wool has not been dry since the autumn. The bell rope under his glove is stiff with ice. His rifle rests against his knee. The ward over his firing step works, and he knows it works because a sergeant inspects it every night with a lamp and a tally-card. Since the age of five he has been taught that the Creator is, and that the Creator will return when faith is perfect. Nobody inspects that with a lamp.

The heresy suits him. It accounts for both things he has seen: the ward holds, and nobody answers. It leaves him his rifle and his relics. The only thing it takes is the promise, and the promise was the part that made every failure his fault. Under Perfect Faith, the comrade who died at the next post died because someone's faith fell short. Under the Absent heresy he died because the holiness had worn thin at that post on that night. The second is a supply problem. Soldiers forgive supply problems. They do not forgive being told the shell was their own doing.

The heretics point at the fog as though it were evidence for their side. It is nothing of the kind. Whatever the Grey is, its existence proves only that the Grey exists, which nobody on the north wall needed a theologian to tell them.

I have no figures on how widely it is held. The Bureau of Purity has figures. They are sealed, and I am content to leave them that way.

#On the Authorized Answer and Its Enforcement

The Church already explains the silence three ways, and none of them needs a corpse.

The Doctrine of Divine Withdrawal was framed at the Second Doctrinal Congress in A.S. 72, when the Church's offices were still being assembled out of provisional councils and refugee chapters, eighteen years before the Concordat of Strasbourg made a Synod of them. It holds that the Rationalists smashed the apparatus through which the divine voice reached mortal ears. The Doctrine of the Inaudible Voice, ratified at the Fourth Doctrinal Congress in A.S. 104, holds that He speaks and we are too unworthy to hear. The Doctrine of Perfect Faith holds that He will act decisively once our faith is complete. These are the authorized explanations. I set them down here with all the confidence their ratification gives them.

Measured against these, the heretic's sin is economy. He explains the same silence without a single congress.

The Bureau of Doctrine defines what may be believed, and the Bureau of Purity enforces it. Standing Order 7-A, issued in A.S. 92 and renewed in A.S. 187, classes every heresy touching the divine nature as First-Order Prohibited. That classification tells the clerk which drawer the file goes in. The sentence is a separate matter. The Absent heresy is rated Heresy, Third Degree, and carries branding, confiscation, and reassignment to the Penal Choir for a term of not less than seven years. One scale measures how dangerous the thought is. The other measures how useful the thinker remains, and a man who still trusts the wards is useful.

No special tribunal exists for this heresy. Ordinary machinery handles it, and that is an insult of its own. Doubt Auditors read confession abstracts for a wrong silence after the bell or an amen that comes late. Street-Vicars stop a man in the ration line, have him recite Article One, and listen for the tense of the verb. White-Mantled Inquisitors take his letters, run the censor-knife down the lines, and enter the pages in a confiscation manifest beneath his service number. Relic Authenticators keep certifying the reliquaries on his parapet. As the erratum above records, their writ ends at custody and grade.

#On Continuing Service

The heresy has a particular nastiness that I am obliged to record. It does not tell a man to desert. It tells him to stay at his post, ring the bell, and spend the dead god's holiness carefully, because no more is coming. It keeps soldiers on the wall, and the Bureau of Purity punishes it anyway. The heretic has done the Line no harm. What he has done is cancel the debt. A soldier who owes the Creator nothing owes the Church nothing either, and the Church does not run on goodwill.

My own interest here is not hidden. If the heretic is right, the Bureau of Doctrine becomes an executor's office and the Hieromnemon becomes a probate clerk. I have looked at the career prospects of probate clerks. They are poor, and the robes are worse.

The question of the Creator's condition is outside my competence and outside my permissions, and I have kept to both. The Line has to hold either way. Königsberg's bells will ring tonight whoever is paying for them, the soldier will pay his share in years, and the Ledger will record it under the heading Doctrine provides.
