Eternal Forges

Wrath keeps producing. The bellows still need people.

Maldrake's mountain forges in the Thracian highlands produce arms and the Hammered without orders or inventory. Enslaved humans work the bellows until their lungs fail. The weapons are surplus; the people are spent.

#On the Forges

"The forges don't care. They must produce." — Bureau of Doctrine working file on the Sin-General of Wrath

I start with the bellows, because the bellows are where the people are. Every Eternal Forge on record is a mountain fitted with lungs. Furnace mouths are cut into the rock and working galleries are stacked one above the next. At each mouth is a great bellows, worked by hand. Behind the bellows stand the anvils, and behind the anvils is the hammering. No one has recorded a pause in it.

The Eternal Forges are mountain complexes in the Thracian highlands, inside the domain of Maldrake, Sin-General of Wrath. The name is plural, and the plural is all the Bureau can certify. Nobody has mapped which peaks hold them, how many there are, or where one complex ends and the next begins, and I will not map them from a writing-desk in the rear. They are separate from the Forge-Pyre Bastion, Maldrake's citadel at the centre of the Iron Wastes. The Bastion is where Wrath keeps its seat. The Forges are where it keeps its hands.

#On the Hammering

The Maldrake dossier's list of products is short and sufficient: swords, spears, armour, siege components, and ammunition in calibres unknown to the Bureau of Ordnance. Nothing on file suggests the list is complete. Everything on file suggests the quantities are absurd.

The Forges make weapons for armies that do not exist. They make weapons that lie in the open and rust because Wrath's whole host lacks the hands to lift them. The Forges take no orders and stop for no inventory. They have no commissariat to consult and would not consult one if they had it. The working file says it in three words, which is more economy than the Bureau of War has ever managed: They must produce.

Compare the Synod's own foundries. A shell cast at home needs a requisition, a countersignature, a Tithe assessment, a blessing of the casting, and a second countersignature attesting that the blessing took place. I have signed such papers, and gladly. The Church arms her soldiers slowly and knows to the round what she has issued. Maldrake arms his without counting, and the uncounted surplus sits on the mountainside and goes orange in the rain.

None of this makes Wrath a fool. Maldrake commands an army in the strict sense, with formations, siege trains and an appetite for walls that the Bureau of War has learned to respect. The Forges supply that army and keep going long after supply has stopped meaning anything. This is the sin in industrial form. The work serves its purpose, then carries on without one.

#On the Hands

The bellows are worked by enslaved human beings. I want the word enslaved left exactly where I have put it. These are captives held by force. Nothing in the Bureau's files describes them as cultists, converts or volunteers, and no clerk of the Bureau of Purity will be permitted to tidy them into one of those columns for the convenience of his annual return.

They work until their lungs fill with ember. The air at a furnace mouth carries hot ash, the ash goes wherever the breath goes, and a body can take it only for so long. When a worker falls, the next in line takes the handle. The Maldrake dossier records that the line has no end, because Wrath does not run short of raw material. The phrase is the dossier's. I would have chosen another. The Forges would not have noticed.

The bodies stay in the mountain. The working file says the metal is fed with bone and blood and with the suffering of those who failed. The Maldrake dossier adds that the blades are quenched in blood. That is everything the Church knows about the metallurgy. No inspector has watched a pour. No chaplain has witnessed a quench. The Bureau of Engineering holds no sample of forge-steel with a credible account of its making. I set down the two reported facts and add no third.

The files do not record where the replacements are taken from, how long a worker lasts at the handle, or how many have been used up. Any figure printed here would be invented.

BUREAU OF DOCTRINE — PASTORAL NOTICE The labourers of the Eternal Forges are held by force. Chaplains shall name them in the intercessions for the taken, and shall not enter them among the fallen or the apostate.

#On What Leaves the Anvil

Weapons leave the anvil. So do the Hammered.

The Hammered are demons shaped in the Eternal Forges. They are made there, not converted there, and nothing in them was ever human. They carry no memory of a mother, a parish or a name, so nothing in them hesitates. The working file calls them pure wrath given physical form, weapons that walk. The general description of Maldrake's demons applies to them: living metal, with the weapon grown into the limb. I add no anatomy the file does not give.

The distinction matters because nearly everything else in Maldrake's host was once a person. Ember-Soldiers, his rank and file, are made from the human dead. Forge-Beasts are the Synod's own captured siege machinery, now crawling, with their crews fused into the controls. The Crucible-Born are survivors of the Crucible Cities who came out of them still able to think. None of these is documented as a product of the Forges. The working file says Maldrake's demons were people once, then immediately concedes that some were spawned in the Eternal Forges. The Hammered are that exception. The labourers at the bellows are not.

The second parent's connection is narrower. The Gore-Slinger dossier records that Maldrake's variant carries the thermal residue of the Eternal Forges in its blood-sacs. The sacs ignite on impact and release a cloud that is both toxic and incendiary, charring skin and setting oiled equipment alight. Nobody has recorded how the residue gets into the blood. The same dossier says Gore-Slingers are shaped in pits and holding-pens behind the enemy front, and nothing on file says the Forges make them. Somehow the Forges' heat reaches our trenches. The route is unknown.

The Lore Book sets Wrath's front opposite Bastion-Lorraine and calls that bastion the western anchor of the Line.

The Sagittal Line runs north to south. Its southern anchor is Bastion-Constantinople, once known as Lorraine. Maldrake faces it from Thrace, alongside Kargath. The output of these mountains marches south, toward the Bosphorus.

#On the Front They Feed

Maldrake presses Constantinople from the Thracian Plain to its north, and he comes in campaigns. His primary assault formation, the Hellbow Legion, attacks in waves of forge-warriors, Ember-Soldiers and corrupted siege machinery. Ahead of it come Gore-Slingers, throwing fire into the trench. Every sword in that host came from somewhere. The Bureau assumes, and I agree, that a great many came from these mountains.

Wrath's domain divides its labour, and the divisions must be kept straight. The Forge-Pyre Bastion is the citadel. The Iron Wastes are the ruined country around it. The Eternal Forges make arms and the Hammered. The Crucible Cities refine living servants over years. The Burning Trenches attack. The Char Fields keep the dead at their posts. Any report that treats these names as interchangeable will go back to its author with my compliments and a red pen.

What the Synod knows of the interior is thin. In A.S. 189 a Bureau of Engineering surveyor at the western margin of the Wastes watched his instruments melt before he could take a reading. The Thracian subterranean survey of A.S. 200 detected routing behaviour in slag-rivers beneath the trenchlines and was recalled before it finished. Neither party entered a Forge, and neither found a road to one. Every description above reached us second-hand or from a distance.

#On the Present Condition

The hammering continues. The Maldrake dossier, sealed this year, lists production as active. The bellows are still worked by hand, and fallen hands are still replaced. Weapons still go out to an army that cannot carry them all, and the rest still rusts where it was stacked.

The Church holds no inventory. It has no count of complexes, anvils, finished arms, Hammered shaped, or human beings spent at the bellows and the quench. The Bureau of War wants the first four for its campaign tables. I want the fifth for the Ledger. Neither of us will get them while the Forges stand.
