Ash-Hospice Row
Mercy, filed in glass and soot
Brast's western hospice district catches the soot, the dying and the facts the Ordnance ledgers misplace; by A.S. 201 its fever dishes have begun writing names.
Codex Ref. II.2.06-201
Ash-Hospice Sisters
Mercy keeps the ward warm and the accident ledger warmer
The Ash-Hospice Sisters tend Brast's lungs, confession booths, and most dangerous archive: mercy with resin gloves and an exact hand.
Codex Ref. VIII.6.05-001
Bell-Tappers
The profit nearest the bell, where every hymn becomes a hiding place
Bell-Tappers are the richest and most doomed Hidden Pipe-Runner faction, moving black diesel beside bellways where civic resonance hides the hiss.
Codex Ref. XII.3.05-001
Brast Ordnance Works
Where warmth is rationed and boilers require introductions
Brast turns licensed breath into chrismole, stamped drums and artillery measures. Ninety-two thousand souls owe it warmth; its engines have begun to answer.
Codex Ref. II.2.01-005
Bureau of Ordnance
No violence is lawful until inventory permits it
The Bureau of Ordnance blesses powder, counts shells, seals fuel, restrains officers, and teaches matter to obey violence only after the Ledger consents.
Codex Ref. VIII.2.11-090
Cadence License
The paper licenses breath; Kest decides whether it works
A cadence license permits a Brast throat to command machinery. Doctrine and Ordnance keep the seals; Kest keeps the voice, the register, and the power to erase it.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.11-002
Canal South
Where a locked casket does the work of a cathedral
Canal South keeps Brast's substrate receipts beneath a counting table. Pex Ruln holds the key; the auditors hold requests answered in excellent grammar.
Codex Ref. II.2.01-023
Chapterhouse Folio Combust-IX
Engineering keeps manuals. The Chapterhouse keeps the shelf.
Brast's Chapterhouse keeps the Third Handling of substrate behind a chapel door. Combust-IX records the rubric; a later hand warns that fuel can answer wrong.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.74-009
Choirmaster-Calibration Ilyra Kest
The woman who taught valves to obey a murmur
Ilyra Kest presides over Brast's Calibration Choir: three hundred and twelve licensed throats, one ruined public voice, and valves that still obey.
Codex Ref. III.1.04-002
Chrismole
Blessed fuel, classified substrate, and the blue-black argument of necessity
Chrismole is sanctified fuel: oil disciplined by hymn, substrate, seal, and denial until it warms guns, feeds engines, and argues back.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.12-072
Chrismole Crown
Seventeen mouths, one hot room, and every office pretending it holds the leash
The Chrismole Crown is Brast's seventeen-mouth furnace-cathedral, where fuel becomes sacrament, machinery learns manners, and blame sweats.
Codex Ref. II.2.01-004
Commander-Auditor Sorn Vale
The ledger that learned to execute before supper
Sorn Vale adjudicates Brast's drums, ledgers, missing gallons, and useful corpses. His boots remain spotless; his docket does not.
Codex Ref. III.1.04-004
Distillation Hymn
Fourteen stanzas to make fuel obey; no license for an answer
The Distillation Hymn governs Brast's fuel with fourteen stanzas and a three-beat tolerance. The procedure remains sacred, the explanation has retreated, and the Choir reports an answer from the furnaces.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.12-014
Furnace Chapterhouse of Saint-Combust
The explosion received a feast day; the furnace received priests
The Furnace Chapterhouse of Saint-Combust tends Brast's Chrismole Crown, where an explosion became a saint and maintenance learned to wear vestments.
Codex Ref. VIII.6.04-001
Gauge Ward
Where brass confesses before men are permitted to lie
The Gauge Ward is Brast's inner-ring instrument throat, where pressure needles, licensed voices, and Ilyra Kest decide which lie becomes artillery.
Codex Ref. II.2.01-020
Gauge Ward Hall
Where licensed voices teach brass to testify
Gauge Ward Hall calibrates Brast's pressure gauges and artillery sights under licensed song and serial seal. The tools carry an unresolved rival chorus; Mire is expected, and the instruments are already answering.
Codex Ref. II.2.01-023
Guildmaster Maer Voss
The filters were adequate; the lungs were not
Maer Voss declared Brast's filters adequate for thirty-one years and died of lung varnish in A.S. 186. His successor inspected sooner and charged more.
Codex Ref. III.1.04-004
Guildmaster Pex Ruln
The man who owns the mesh beneath sanctity
Pex Ruln governs Brast's filters, locks, substrate receipts, and the useful delay between sanctity and throughput. His hands are never clean.
Codex Ref. III.1.04-003
Heretical Hymn
A furnace called brother, seven copies reduced to ash
In late A.S. 201, a forbidden Brast work measure called Saint-Combust Brother Furnace. The Chapterhouse burned seven copies; the question of kinship survived.
Codex Ref. VII.8.10-201
Kest's Measures
Whoever licenses the song sets the price of silence
Kest's Measures are Brast's Calibration Choir: the licensed throats that keep its machines obedient and charge the city for every withheld note.
Codex Ref. VIII.6.02-002
Kiln Three
The mouth remains warm; the form of address remains unsettled
Brast's Kiln Three became Saint-Combust after nine men died in A.S. 74. Its shell stays warm, its ash enters valve oil, and its priests control who may ask it questions.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.72-002
Litany of Combustive Submission
A prayer for obedience, with the obedient party unspecified
Brast's furnace priests recite the Litany of Combustive Submission while the Calibration Choir holds the fourth bell. The priests demand obedience; whose submission the title requires remains unsettled.
Codex Ref. VI.6.04-001
Missing Drums Incident
Fourteen arrests, three confessions, and nothing to put back on the floor
Seven sealed chrismole drums vanished from Brast's Manifest Court in spring A.S. 201. Fourteen arrests and three confessions recovered none; the Court improved its arithmetic and retained its shortage.
Codex Ref. VII.4.18-201
Night-Syllable
A sound without a licence, preserved under countermark
Brast's night roar acquired an unlicensed syllable. Its recorded playback reversed three lamps, marked the moisture, and left the Bureau with an exhibit it cannot explain.
Codex Ref. VII.4.11-001
Night-Syllable Cylinder
The seal certifies custody; the contents remain uncertified
Kest has sealed Brast's night-syllable cylinder. The Bureau can certify the seal; contents, provenance and any connection to the unlicensed sound remain unproved.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.72-004
Ordnance Bureau
The office that makes thunder accountable
The Ordnance Bureau numbers, blesses, rations, ships, and recovers the Synod’s lawful violence; its shells arrive late, counted, and indispensable.
Codex Ref. VIII.2.12-090
Rail-Manifest Quarter
Where fuel receives a number, a culprit, and permission to burn
Brast's Rail-Manifest Quarter is the court-throat where chrismole drums are weighed, blessed, numbered, blamed, and sent east to warm the Line.
Codex Ref. II.2.01-021
Slag Market
Where Brast's holy heat cools into crime and soup
The Slag Market is Brast's outer-ring commerce in leaked sanctity: warm chits, forged seals, quiet hymns, hospice filth, stolen heat, and necessary lies.
Codex Ref. II.2.06-201
Still-Canals of Brast
Where holy fuel cools before it learns obedience
Black-water condenser channels beneath Brast, where chrismole cools, mesh clogs, boys vanish, and every lockwheel becomes a theology of delay.
Codex Ref. II.2.01-022
Substrate
The grey thing beneath the hymn
Brast's fourth fuel component is named blandly because useful horrors prefer dull labels, locked caskets, and a hymn before seventh bell.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.92-201
Sulking Engines
When machinery obeys exactly enough to make obedience an accusation
Brast's Sulking Engines delay, contradict, speak, remember, and obey just poorly enough to make every Bureau suspect the machine has learned procedure.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.11-001
The Calibration Choir
Three hundred and twelve licensed throats between fuel and opinion
The Calibration Choir keeps Brast's chrismole obedient: three hundred and twelve licensed throats, one fourth-bell hymn, and machines with opinions.
Codex Ref. VIII.6.02-001
The Chrismole Furnaces of Brast
Faith provides the flame; the Bureau provides the invoice
Ninety-two thousand souls and an unknown number of engines live in Brast, the continent's only producer of sanctified chrismole fuel — and something in the furnaces has recently begun to sing back.
Codex Ref. II.2.01-003
The Chrismole Furnaces of Brast
Where oil learns hymn and iron consents to kill
Brast is the Warm City, a Zone 2 foundry-city whose chrismole furnaces turn fuel, hymn, soot, and denial into artillery breath for the Line.
Codex Ref. II.2.01-003
The Manifest Court
Where a drum becomes lawful and arithmetic learns the rope
The Manifest Court of Brast counts chrismole into legality: weigh-bridges, wax tables, variance pits, missing gallons, Sorn Vale's balcony, and the sacred terror of a number disagreeing with itself.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.93-090
Warmth Thieves
When the pipe says live, arithmetic becomes theft
Brast calls the Warmth Thieves criminals because calling them necessary would indict every official heat table nailed above a freezing room.
Codex Ref. XII.6.06-201
