Adriatic Coast
The white edge where pilgrimage, quarantine, and invoice learn to float
The Adriatic Coast is the Synod's white southern hinge: pilgrim piers, quarantine flags, cliff guns, fever wards, and profitable fraud.
Codex Ref. II.7.03-201
Aegean
The sea is held where it is counted
The Aegean is the Synod's southern salt-ledger: supply lane, pilgrim road, smuggler's chapel, drown-office, and sea with a clerical appetite.
Codex Ref. II.4.09-072
Aegean Approaches
The sea route where even sleep must show papers
Southern maritime threshold where the Aegean supply sea, Shipka road, Thessaloniki chains, and Syrion's fog politely conspire to make motion taxable.
Codex Ref. II.4.09-072
Aegean Shrine-Circuit
Devotion by convoy, tariff, bell, and brine
Licensed pilgrim sea-route where Marseille weighs devotion, Saffron quarantines it, Thessaloniki sings at it, and the Bureau invoices the miracle.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.40-123
Barge-Lip Market
The planks keep no ledger; the bridges keep every debt
Barge-Lip Market hangs from the Causeyworks' canal edges, trading fish, tar, cheap spice and lock priority. The planks keep no ledger; the stone on the way home keeps every debt.
Codex Ref. II.1.02-002
Battery Twelve
The gun agrees, within its arc
Battery Twelve is Saffron Bastion's cliff-gun answer to Demon-Lures: command from the Marshal, payments from the Courts, and no reach beneath the piers.
Codex Ref. II.4.09-012
Breach Plagues
The Bureau found a cure in its own ink.
Around A.S. 110–115, communal violence became the Bureau of Oaths' proof that broken vows rot. The dead supplied the argument; the Breach Rites supplied the ink.
Codex Ref. VII.8.11-112
Brine Choir
Wet boots, open throats, and the useful heresy beneath the piers
The Brine Choir is Saffron Bastion's tolerated under-pier congregation: heretical, useful, salt-lunged, and far too effective to burn.
Codex Ref. XI.1.07-001
Brine Fever closures
Ships wait at the waterline; release waits for paper
An A.S. 201 survey of maritime fever restrictions: Saffron's A.S. 112 catastrophe, continuing quarantine practice, and Nenos's disputed boom account. The Ledger records waiting and custody; it certifies no closure of the whole coast.
Codex Ref. VII.8.13-201
Brine Fever Winter
The dead became a proportion; the survivors became a jurisdiction.
In A.S. 112, brine-fever killed one in five at Saffron Bastion. Its aftermath brought a Quarantine Prefecture above the harbor and unlicensed mourning below.
Codex Ref. VII.8.12-112
Bureau of Pilgrimage
Three million permits. Six million Crowns. No foot moves unwatched.
The Bureau of Pilgrimage governs all movement across the Theocracy's holy roads — issuing tokens, licensing routes, crushing guilds, and extracting revenue from every soul who dares to walk toward sanctity without prior authorisation.
Codex Ref. III.2.07-004
Canon-Inquisitor Silex Marrow
The chisel arrives after the lie has learned masonry
Canon-Inquisitor Silex Marrow hunts sequences, not sinners: Saffron's profitable water, Archivolt's listening stone, and the names buried between them.
Codex Ref. III.2.01-201
Canon-Marshal Veyra Sable
The harbour balances; the water remains behind her
Canon-Marshal Veyra Sable commands Saffron Bastion's berths and guns. Twenty-three years at the helm, an unrecorded reliance on the Brine Choir, and a pending audit have not turned her desk toward the water.
Codex Ref. III.2.01-437
Coastal Countermeasures
The hook is zealous; the seal is pending
Calling for communion is heresy; calling for destruction is zeal. This A.S. 201 survey examines Saffron's disputed lure apparatus and insurance recovery still under review. The hook has a defence; the seal remains pending.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.31-002
Coastal Registry
Corrections entered; machinery unaffected
The Coastal Registry is Doctrine's wet end of the file: classifying Saffron's hazards, correcting its lies, and leaving the machinery that profits from both running.
Codex Ref. III.3.07-201
Croatia
A ridge to pray on, a coast to unload at
Croatia survives in the Ledger as Kalnik's armed shrines and Dalmatian supply harbours. The Church certifies the cargo more readily than the borders.
Codex Ref. II.7.04-201
Dalmatia
Where rope is sold and sons are assessed
Dalmatia is the Synod's Adriatic supply coast: Venetian cargo, quarantine piers and parish rolls. Rope, salt and harbour labour are sold; the tenth son is assessed.
Codex Ref. II.7.05-201
Dalmatian coast
Salt Fish, Sealed Passes, and a Tithe of Sons
The Dalmatian coast feeds the southern Line with salt fish, harbour labour, and fishermen's sons. The boats return to the quay; the sons answer to Strasbourg.
Codex Ref. II.3.07-201
Demon-Lures
The hook is holy when the bait has been notarized
Demon-Lures are Saffron Bastion's licensed bait-mechanisms: lantern, salt, false number, tone, and gun, all pretending invitation can be filed apart from bargain.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.31-001
Dock Union of the Low Nets
A harbor can wait for cargo; a drafted family cannot
The Ropehand Compact protects Saffron Bastion's dockhands with slow strikes, smuggling routes and knots. Three strikes won no concessions; the Chapterhouse drafted their families. Mercy saves ammunition.
Codex Ref. XI.5.03-201
Duesstairs
The steps tell you what you owe. The clerks decide how much.
Saffron Bastion's tax ascent: one hundred and forty-seven steps, each carved with a dues category. The invoice proves payment; the dry-pass grants release. The rich have another route.
Codex Ref. II.4.09-002
Europa
The continent as filed, wounded, taxed, and made obedient enough
Europa is not whole; it is the continent filed into zones, bastions, sea-rims, independent nuisances, and the eastern wound Hell keeps open.
Codex Ref. II.0.00-201
Gilt-Knives
The gilding is the claim paper; the knife settles the dispute
Saffron Bastion's salvage cartel sells exclusive wreck claims, fixes auction schedules, and keeps its dues current. The gilt is paper; the knives settle the rest.
Codex Ref. XI.1.08-001
Harbor Marshal Command
The berth may be refused; the gun need not explain
Saffron Bastion's armed harbor authority holds the berths, chains and cliff guns. Canon-Marshal Veyra Sable keeps the port supplied, the lure lanes ranged, and the cost entered as marine incidents.
Codex Ref. VIII.5.09-201
Insurance Courts
The storm arrives after the paperwork
Saffron's Insurance Courts turn wreckage into writs, writs into liens, and storms into assets; the pending audit asks why the paperwork arrived first.
Codex Ref. VIII.2.12-134
Insurance Courts of Saffron
The storm passes. The writs remain.
Saffron's civil courts turn wrecks into tradable writs, wages into liens, and storms into authority. Writ-Lector Odrin Vale remains in office; Canon-Inquisitor Marrow's audit remains pending.
Codex Ref. VIII.2.12-134
Lanternline Chandlers' Lodge
The guild that sells darkness by the hour
At Saffron Bastion, the Lanternline Chandlers' Lodge sells oil in public and darkness by the hour, keeping the harbour alive, priced, and properly afraid.
Codex Ref. XII.26.01-068
Low Nets
Where Saffron stands because the drowned keep working
Low Nets is Saffron Bastion's wet undercity: sub-habitable, indispensable, fevered, organised, and louder than its governors prefer.
Codex Ref. II.4.09-112
Mediterranean
The oldest road the Church holds, and the only one it cannot pave
The Mediterranean feeds the southern Line with grain, shot and pilgrims. Rival ports tax the passage, quarantine the passengers and leave room for contraband. The sea takes its share without a receipt.
Codex Ref. II.7.01-201
Mortar Saints
What the Index strikes from paper, the chisel returns to stone
The Mortar Saints hide forbidden names in the Archivolt Causeyworks' bridges. The Index condemns, the masons preserve, and the Saintspan audit remains authorized and unexecuted.
Codex Ref. XI.3.03-001
Mouth-Sluice
Three questions at the waterline, one unanswered debt overhead
The canal threshold of the Archivolt Causeyworks, where Goss asks three questions beneath his own stone debt. Barges wait by the hour; the lintel waits indefinitely.
Codex Ref. II.1.02-002
Namewash Cloisters
A clean name costs money; the confession stays in slate
The Causeyworks washes doubtful names with lye and ash, then keeps the confessions in slate. Recognition costs another visit; the old identity remains in stone.
Codex Ref. II.1.02-006
Port Court
Where cargo waits while permission proves it has a soul
The Port Court names cargo before mercy may touch it: a Commerce bench where sacks become law, law becomes delay, and delay invoices the hungry.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.89-112
Prefect Halden Greaves
The medicine supplies the cause; the Prefect supplies the duration
Prefect Halden Greaves keeps Saffron Bastion's fever logs meticulous and its holding yards full. His dry-pass restores legal standing; his quarantine hold suspends it. The medicine supplies the cause. He supplies the duration.
Codex Ref. III.2.01-1301
Quarantine Prefecture
Quarantine is mercy, once mercy has learned to count labour
Saffron Bastion's Quarantine Prefecture made fever a jurisdiction: dry-pass, holding yard, burn crew, suspended identity, and mercy with a labour quota.
Codex Ref. VIII.2.11-112
The Archivolt Causeyworks
Where stone keeps accounts, and every arch is also a court of law
A canal city where bridges are courts and debts are carved in granite — the Archivolt Causeyworks keeps its ledger in stone, and the stone has begun to listen.
Codex Ref. II.1.02-001
The Heartlands
The safe country, provided one defines safety as distance from teeth and proximity to stamps
The Heartlands are the Synod's safe interior only by infantry arithmetic: Zones 1–3 feed the Line with bread, steel, bodies, bells, paperwork, and bones.
Codex Ref. II.0.02-201
Thessaloniki (Harbor-Chain Towers)
Where every passage is a registration event, and the chains keep the ledger
The Synod's Aegean gullet — Twin Towers of the Harbor-Chain processing ~280,000 souls and every caravan bound for the southern Line, while the Drowned Choir counts beneath the psalm-hum.
Codex Ref. II.4.09-003
Undertide Salvagers
Rope at the waist, question at the surface, and the useful blasphemy of checking before the office has finished lying
The Undertide Salvagers are the faction that descends when an office has declared a loss settled, a roster closed, and a body unrecoverable — and checks. Their central heresy is that checking is a form of prayer the Bureau cannot stamp.
Codex Ref. XII.13.05-001
Warden Goss of Archivolt
Three questions on paper, one debt in stone
At the Mouth-Sluice, Goss asks a traveller's name, destination and ink-weight beneath his own debt, incurred for overweight devotional candles in A.S. 189. I found him there in A.S. 197 and 201.
Codex Ref. III.2.01-189
Zones 5 through 7
Mud, mouth, water — the outer grammar of danger
Zones 5 through 7 are the Synod’s controlled contact belt: contested mud, demonic custody, sea-rim commerce, contraband, pilgrimage, and useful contamination.
Codex Ref. XIII.1.00-207
